Nissan Repair: 95 Nissan Altima stumble, nissan altima gxe, nissan altima

Question
My 95 Nissan Altima GXE(auto transmission) had this problem about 3 years now. In Drive, when stopped at traffic light, the RPM will drop,  almost like it's gonna stall.  When in idle, no problem at all. While driving, you can feel the gear change not smoothly and acceleration slow to catch on. I have changed oil filer, spark plugs, replace distributor cap and adding fuel injector cleaner. None seemed to help. After three years, this seem to get worse now. I am afaid that one day it will give up at an intersection.

Answer
Peter,

It sounds like you need to clean the throttle body and make sure the idle dashpot is working properly.  Basically, the throttle stops on a spring loaded and dampened device that keeps the plate from shutting all at once.  Thus, it keeps the engine from trying to die at idle.  Now, I would get carburetor cleaner and clean the plates on the inside and keep from getting it on the throttle position switch.  That is the plastic box with wires coming out of it.  Once the black gunk is gone put the intake hose back on and wait about five minutes to start it.  The engine will cough a bit and finally start.  Remember that you flooded it cleaning the throttle.  And, the intake hose between the airmeter and throttle body has to be reconnected to start the car.  Once it starts it will clean up and idle nice.  That should correct the problem.  Another thing you can do it set the minimum air at idle on the intake.  This is a big screw that if you turn it in it idles down and if you turn it out the idle increases.  Only do this in small increments and remember where you started as you do not want to get it too far off for smog purposes.  Check it out and email me back with the results.
