Nissan Repair: Z24 Timing Marks ?, crankshaft pulley, crank pulley

Question
My son has a 1990 Pickup with a Z24 engine. We changed the timing chain at 150,000 miles. When we went to reset the Distributor I noticed that Nissan had changed the Marks on the Crank pulley since the 1980's. The first problem was that the hood had been changed and there are no sticks under it. That prompted me to look under the hood of my 1997 Nissan PU also with Z24 engine. I discovered that it also had the same Marks on the Crank Pulley with a Single Pointer protruting fron the timing cover. When we looked at the stickers there also are no diagrams to descipher the 5 or so Notches on the Crank Pulley. We have purchased several aftermarket manuals that also give no clue about this design. Our question is this, what crankshaft degrees corespond to which Notches on the crankshaft pulley.
Thanks...Matt

Answer
Matt,

The marks are in one degree increments.  If you pull numbger one plug and turn over the engine to where air starts coming out of the spark plug hole then you are coming up on number 1.  Move the crank pulley ot the first mark and you should be at number 1.  I like to use white paint to make it for reference.  Now, if you have the valve cover off you can watch the intake cam follower as it just starts to move and you will have it exact.  Remember that there are machining variances.  I like to get the base timing set and then go out and power time the engine by advancing it a degree and drive it and notice if it clatters.  If not I go up a degree at a time until it does and then I back it off a degree or two and it is optimized for performance and gas mileage.
