Nissan Repair: motor stalls, fuel pressure regulator, nissan pickup

Question
i have a 97 nissan pickup 175000 miles on it. first started out by motor dying at red lights. it started right back up and ran fine. as time went on it just got worse. now it is down to running ok but as it warms up it smokes and sputters will not run ok till the motor cools off. it has had a bad smell from the exhaust for some time and now the plugs are all carboned up! the computer says there is a bad warm air temp. sensor. could it be a bad distibutor? would appreciate some advice.

Answer
William,

Replace the air inlet temperature sensor and reset the code.  The carbon on the plugs could be from a bad fuel pressure regulator or a plugged fuel filter.  I would baseline the engine by doing a tuneup and then check out what is going on.  Be sure to clean the throttle body.  Email me back if you have problems.
