Nissan Repair: 2003 Maxima SE ABS brake servicing, wheel disk brakes, warped rotors

Question
I've just bought a 2003 Maxima SE, 55k mi., that was parked awhile before sale and the rough, rusty rotors wore the pads way down - brake fluid level dropped to where light came on after our 300mi delivery trip home. Brakes are still pulsing badly so I plan to replace all rotors and pads, and this is my first brake job on an ABS-equipped car with 4-wheel disk brakes. Is any special technique needed when pressing the calipers back in or bleeding the lines on a Nissan ABS system? Also, can the calipers simply be pressed in? I've seen at least one mention elsewhere of screwing, not pressing them in on Nissans and/or on rear calipers due to the parking brake mechanism on the rear disk; don't want to damage them by doing the wrong thing. Any other tips welcome.

thanks for your help, can't find a book on this year/model yet!

Answer
Paul,

The back brake pistons screw in and you need a tool for this.  Go to the parts store and they will sell you one for aobut $20 bucks.  Basically, it is the old piston compressor with a screw thread to allow for the piston to be pressed in while screwing it in.  This design is for the parking brakes.  The back pistons puch out and the screw feature keeps them from going in to far when you are not on the brakes.

Buy factory pads to keep life simple or go with Performance Friction carbon metalic from Autozone.  These keep the pedal feel nice.  The pulsation is from the warped rotors.  Nissan rotors have this problem often.  If you have time you could go with rockauto.com and just order a set of four and be done with it.  Also, be really sure that you bleed the brakes with Ford High Performance brake fluid to get the old fluid out and get everything clean inside after you install all those new parts.  oh, the light came on due to the low fluid as the car has a float in the master cylinder.
