Nissan Repair: maxima front axle replacement, strut bolts, spindle hub

Question
the drivers front axle needs to be replaced on a 1996 maxima - can you send me the procedure or anything i may need to be aware of during the replacement

Answer
Jim,

You have to make sure that you have metric sockets and wrenches along with a large socket for the drive axle on the hub.  Basically, air tools make the job much easier or you are going to need a long breaker bar to break the nut loose on the hub.  Take the wheel off and then take the nut off and then take the two strut bolts off and the tie rod end and the brake caliper.  Now, pivot the spindle to one side and pop the driveshaft out of the transmission.  The CV driveshaft may be frozen onto the spindle hub and that is going to require a press to get the driveshaft out.  But, once it is out you just reverse the procedure to get the rebuilt one back in.  Lastly, you will need an alignment since you removed the strut bolts from the spindle.  Get it aligned asap to prevent tire wear.  The lugnuts torque to 80 foot pounds.  Oh, and do not let the brake caliper hang by the brake hose.  Use a coat hanger to hang the caliper from the spring that is on the strut.  This keeps it out of the way and keeps from damaging the brake hose.
