Nissan Repair: 1992 Nissan Maxima- Shutting off, air control valve, nissan maxima

Question
Hello Von Sudderth,
Thanks for your help in advance.
Here is the situation.  My car losses power and shuts off sometimes at a stop sign/signal or in transit usually with my foot off the accelerator.  Originally the problem was much worse, but after changing the fuel pump, the knock sensor and most recently the idle control sensor I no longer have to keep one foot on the accelarator and the other on the brake to keep it from shutting off.  I am about to buy a new family vechile, but I wanted to keep this car for utility purposes.  Here are specs on the vechile:

1992 nissan maxima (third owner)
100,000 miles
serviced frequently
No other major problems (clean)
Around town driving

P.S.:  The last mechanic who got the car running suggested that maybe the fuel pump, installed by another mechanic, might be defected.

Answer
Frank,

If the fuel pump was not a factory part it could well fail.  I have done the aftermarket thing with fuel pumps and ended up replacing three on one car within a month.  If the fuel pressure checks good I would be looking at cleaning the throttle body and making sure the idle air control valve is clean and working properly.  You say the idle control sensor which means map sensor to me so if that is the case then the idle air control valve would be my next step.  If the idle air control valve has already been replaced I would really look at a good cleaning of the throttle body.  Now, the throttle position switch was checked too and if not have it checked.
