hi sir ,my mom has a 1994 nissan sentra xe with a 1.6 engine and a RL4F03A trans she has only 74000 miles she has had it since new .she takes it in and has the trans sev every 20,000 miles been a great car till the other day she left for work and came back it was not shifting ? i checked it it was shifting from 1gear to 2nd but it's like 2nd is not there the eingine race's till it kicks back to 1 gear  reverse fine there has never been any sliping till this i looked at the dip stick look nice and clear and red not burnt  other than 2 nd and 3rd not there works fine any ideas thanks for your help jimmy

The electronics that control the servos could be going out or the servo that shifts those gears could be going out.  I would take it to Cottman Transmissions and have it checked for codes and the components I indicated.  I have been taken advantage at other shops and Cottman has not let me down yet.  No, I am not getting anything out of them but they have been true to their word when they have done work for me...
