Followup .... I think you misunderstood my followup question, when I remove the heater/ac control box, is there a cable attached to the back that controls the different vents, or are they controlled electronically
Question - I forgot to ask you, when I remove the heater/ac control box, are there cables that connect to the box that controls the flow of air, such as through the dash vents, defroster etc.? If not, what controls the flow of air?  Thanks Rich
I have an 01 Frontier vin 1N6DD21S81C381918 March 01 I have to replace a bulb in the heater/ac unit. First of all is there a replacement for it? It looks to me as though I have to remove the radio first along with the front dash cover, then pull the heater/ac control box out, remove the front cover on that and see if the bulb is replacable or an L.E.D. that has to be soldered in Am I correct ? Do I have to disconnect the air bags or is disconnecting the battery enough? Thanks, Rich

Rich,

You have the process down.  Go to Radio Shack and match the bulb there as for two they are somthing like $1.99 and at the dealer the bulb, with socket is like $8.00 each.  All you do is straighten the pins on the old bulb and instert the new one and bend the wires out where they will make contact.  It is cool that you have the process down for the removal and assembly.  And, no the bulb is not an LED.  But, it looks like a small one and I do not know why they do not use LEDs?  I have never tried to use an LED in place of the original but it might be something I will try in the future.

Rich,

If you follow the shop manual they ask that the battery be disconnected.  The airbags do not have to be disconneced since you are no where near them.  If you happen along a yellow wire that is large they you will know that it is the airbag wire.  All cars ahve come to the same standard on airbag harness wiring.  But, there are only those at the steering wheel and the the passenger side dash on yours.  Many new cars have them on the side of the seat and above the window on the sides.  But, you have no problem in what you are doing.

Answer
Rich,

Yes, the cable that is connected to the control unit moves the blend door.  That is the one that gives fresh or recirculate.  Now, you should not have to disconnect this at the air box so it is a moot point.  just take off what you need at the control to get the control panel out far enough to access the bulb connector.  That is what I always do.
