Nissan Repair: speedometer/odometer failed, nissan 240sx, drive assembly

Question
My 92 Nissan 240SX (5-speed ) speedometer/odometer stopped working. What should I look for ?  All fuses are ok, and  I also checked the wiring harness connections around the transmission. They all seemed OK. This car has 157,000 trouble free miles, with only the usual 'maintenance' repairs.

Answer
If it is making noise in the dash it is probably the speedometer.  If there is no noise it is probably cable.  That is, if it is not digital.  If it is digital you are looking at the drive assembly that is bolted to the transmission.  This is the tone generator for the speedometer.  Lastly, if you have the LCD display and the signal generator replacement does not work you are looking at taking the instruments out and then take them a part and clean the contacts.
