Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: 99 Olds silhouette Premiere Van, lousy situation, pepboys

Question
Hi,

Thankyou for your email. I really dont know if it is running, I cant figure it out. Anyway I understand that the extended warranty covers it so the guys at pepboys are going ahead with the replacement. Thankyou for your time.

Just for curiosity, what is pressure check with guage and how can such an incident blow the fuel pump. I mean running out of gas happens very frequently, I strongly feel it may be a small fix to reset/remove the air/vapor which would be creating the pressure. Your comments

Thanks
Ravi

Hi,

I got myself into a lousy situation.Need help. The problem is that my Van doesnt start. I was watching movie in the van, by keeping it running. After a while van stopped with a shudder as it ran out of gas. I called for help, AAA came to pour gas still the Van didnt start. I had it towed to nearest gas station and filled full gas. Still van doesnt start. Had it towed to pepboys. They seem to think its the fuel pump and gave an estimate of $500. I am not sure if it could be that serious. when ever I try to start the van, the engine seem like its catching on but doesnt start. The lights on panel that go on are "Service engine soon" and "Oil pressure". Need some advice before I cough up that dollars.

Thanks
Ravi

Hello Ravi,
I would never replace a fuel pump without checking the pressure with a gauge.
Can you hear the pump running in the tank when you turn the key to run?

Answer
Hello Ravi,
As for how it can damage the pump, the pump and motor are cooled, and even lubricated by the fuel that is pumped.
When you run out of fuel, there is no cooling or lubricating, but then again, very soon after running out of gas, the pump will quit, due to lack of a crank sense.
But if you try to restart the vehicle, you can force the pump to run dry several times, and can destroy it.
Wheather that is what happened to yours, I can't say.

To check with a gauge, there is a place in the fuel system to connect a test gauge.
