Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: 1992 Buick LaSabre, throttle position sensor, mass airflow sensor

Question
Well, here we go again. Made it all the way down the highway and once I hit slow traffic...boom....It would just
cut out completely. Sometimes under power or sometimes at idle....Codes 22 shows improper throttle
position sensor circuit(voltage low) and code 58 (Pass-Key) Fuel enable circuit. I switched ignition
keys with no change. Unless the decoder module is letting go slowly....HELP!? Might be a bad connection in the coil module. I wiggled the connector around and it fires back up. Only to quit at a randon time. I just replaced the coil mod 2 weeks ago. The car was dead in the driveway with a mass airflow sensor code. I replaced that also. Acting more like a short then anything..thanks...kind of panicing being 51 miles from home at work...

Answer
Hi Greg,
I can feel, and sympathize with your frustration.
But a short, I don't think. A short blows fuses, or melts wires.
What you have is an intermittent OPEN.
It could be from a loose connection, either in wire connectors, switches, or solid state circuits.
There is such a thing as temperature induced intermittant open, meaning due to expansion, etc, something breaks connection.
Unfortunately, those are very hard to find, since when it cools down and makes contact, it is as good as new.
To top it off, it is possible to have multiple problems simultaneously, which can make you pull your hair out.
Systematically testing each item in the system every time may be the only way to repair it.
As for replacing items randomly...if something causes an item to burn out, for example, and just the burned out item is replaced without finding and repairing the root cause, then the replacement item may burn out also.
Yuck!!!
Now I haven't really helped you a bit, and furthermore, I can't, because you have a problem that is going to take some perseverence, and maybe even luck, and possibly some special equipment and experience.

That said, check for vacuum leaks, and the EGR valve.
Don't forget the brake booster may be the cause of a large vacuum leak if the problem happens when the brakes are applied.

Good luck,
Van
