Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: alternator/posative cable, old battery, battery cable

Question
If you pull the posative battery cable can it harm the alternator or electrical system on an 86 buick somerset fi 3.0 v6 f/w/d and if everythings normal should the car stay running or not?

Hi Bob,
I have heard people say it would hurt it, but I don't think so, and I would expect it to keep running, although I just normally don't do it. I would probably stick an old battery in there if I wanted to drive it a ways to get home, if possible.
