Pontiac Repair: fuel issue, pontiac trans am, pressure gauge

Question
hello Todd,
I have just recently bought a 1996 Pontiac Trans Am w/5.7 LT1 engine/4L60E auto trans. My question deals with fuel system, whenever my fuel tank is full or near to full, it cranks and turns over on the first try, however, once the tank drops closer to half and lower it will not turn over on the first try, Ill crank for 5 sec and then I turn the key to off, wait 2-3 sec and try again, this time it will turn over. Thank you for your time and reply.

Answer
Hi Michael:

this is a strange issue. My only thought is that the fuel pump it's self is starting to go bad and with the increased pressure in the tank due to more fule helps the pump prime faster then when it's 1/2 full? you can verify it with pressure gauge. see what it does when it's full and when the tank is 1/2 full with a key on cycle do not crank it. You should have fule pressure right away no delay. I'm sure it has it when the tank is full Not so sure when the tank is closer to empty. does it matter more so hot soak or when it sits over night cold? ? One last thing have you changed the fuel filter in this yet? It's back by the tank above the rear axle area.... Good luck :-)
