Pontiac Repair: lights on shifter going crazy, passlock sensor, carare

Question
I have a 96 pontiac grand am and have recently had the remote start taken out because it was nothing but problems...even though that didnt work as far as the car not starting once in a while I noticed that all the dash lights are on and the lights on the shifter are going crazy...going up and down lighting up in syncronization...could they have messed up some wiring in there and if so is there an easy fix?  by the way taking the remote start out didnt help with the starting of the car...I had to bypass the theft system to get this car to start everytime...Otherwise before that I had to reset the passlock with the key...that was getting old after having to repeatedly do it...please help...if there is a short in there I dont want the car to catch on fire..I have one more question for you...is there a way to disable the airbags?  the module is ruined from lots of water always getting on all 4 floorboards and replacing it would just be a waste of money...I looked online and it said that the airbags could go off at anytime wether the car is being driven or not...my 20 yr old son drives this car and I am worried about his safety...Thank You

Answer
Hi Stephanie:

You answered your own question here sort of. I think you have a couple of issues here. #1 the passlock sensor is bad in the lock housing that is why you had to bypass it. I think you may have an ignition (electrical) switch going had High resiatance in the contacts of the switch will cause all kinds of wierd issues on these cars. But the big thing is the air bad module. All the modules in the carare tied together so if the air bag module is under water chace are #1 that the bags can go of by them self which is NOT a good thing. But the fact that that module is more then lilley bad it can corupt the data line between the modules which is why you dash lamps are freaking out. those lamps are controled by data from the other modules so that data line being bad from the air bag module is more then likley the root you you evil here. I can't tell you how to disable the system there is liability involved. But I'm sure you could figure it out if you really tried. I would get get water leak fixed and then get the air bag module and it's wiring going to the module fixed. I'm sure the connector going into the module is all corroded.
