Pontiac Repair: 97 sunfire headgasket?, blown head gasket, electric cooling fan

Question
How do i know if the headgaskets gone? i bought this car a few weeks ago knowing that the head gasket may be gone. it does over heat, we took the thirmostat out and it ran fine. we thought that maybe it might have just been a faulty thirmostat, bought a new one and the same sh*t happend. you cant buy a lower temp of thirmostat than 180 degrees so we tried drilling  a few xtra holes into the thirmo. to see if it might let  more flow through. annyways lol anny ideas?

Answer
Hi Melissa:

given the symptoms yo stated and knowing the history of that engine I would say chances are that it has a blowen head gasket. it's pretty common for that engine and putting a lower thermostat in it is not a fix. the only thing I can tell you tao make sure is that the electric cooling fan works and when it does turn on make sure your geeting a good amount of hot air being drawn across the radiator. make sure the air dam is still in tact under the radator. if all that is working and still there I would tend to lean towards a blown head gasket. Good luck :)
