Pontiac Repair: 1994 Pontiac Grand Prix SE 3100 v6 SFI, pontiac grand prix, air oil

Question
I found a 3100v6 sfi rebuilt/remanufactured engine with a 5yr/100,000mi warranty + $350core free shipping online for $1699. Should I buy this one or have the old one rebuilt for $1200 to $2600 locally? The old one runs good and strong, has a spark miss. Tried all the additive tricks, changed air/oil filters, oil, pcv, spark plugs. And still will not pass smog. How much of the old engine parts will I transfer to the new engine?

Answer
Hey Frank:

if it has an ignition "spark" miss why do you think it needs a new engine? It could be an electrical issue and a new engine will still have a misfire. I would look further into the problem before I jump the gun and put a new engine in it and still have the same problem. Unless there is a mechanical issue where you have 1 or more cylinders that are low on compression or the engine is burning an excessive amount of oil the repair could be way less $ then that of a complet enegine. To answer the seonc part of you question usually when you get a reman engien it is only complet fro, the valve covers to the oil pan. you need to swap all the plumbing and electronics and the intake and exhaust manifolds. good luck :)
