Pontiac Repair: 1989 pontiac 6000 4 cylinder, solid state electronics, jumper cables

Question
Our 1989 pontiac 6000 4cylinder won't spark. The battery was bad, but we replaced it. It started twice with jumper cables, but wouldn't stay running. Now we can't get it to start, it is like it is not getting any spark to it. What would cause it to not spark

Answer
Hi shellie:

you need to see if it indeen is missing spark If it does start and then dies out it more then likley has spark and is loosing fuel possibly? I guess anything is possible. It couls have spark and then loose it. I would get a spark tester at the car parts store They are cheap and look like a spark plug with a metal clamp on the side of it. and attach it in place of one of the spark plugs and crank the car and see what you have the spark should be a nice blueish color and if the car qyits running you may still see spark whil it is slowing down and eventually stalling it it continues to spark while it is slowing down and stalling spark is on the issue I would look at a fuel deliver problem like a fuel pump.Try it on all 4 cyliners but make sure you reconnet the wires to the plugs when you go to the next cylinder. To answer your question that engine has solid state electronics for the ignition system. no moving parts the coils and ignition module is on the back side of the engine inbetwwen the engine and transmission.
