Pontiac Repair: Power Steering, ac delco, don hi

Question
Took wife's car this a.m. to have that cyliner lock replaced. Decided not to try it myself. Noticed power steering felt like it was full of molasses; it turns OK but it has a slow, thick feeling. I check all fluid levels every two weeks so fluid is OK. No squeals or noise when turn the steering wheel. I'm original owner and can't remember fluid ever being changed. 1997 Grand Am SE, 124,000 mi, automatic, 4 cyl, 2.4L. Any ideas?  Also, if I want to do tune up on this car, what would that include besides plugs?  Thanks so much, Don

Answer
Hi Don:

More then likley a fluid change will not fix this but if you want to try it flush out the fluid and use either a synthetic p/s fluid of GM makes what is called "clold cliamte" p/s fluid. More thne likley with that many miles the steering rack is going bad and the fluid is leaking inside the rack when it's cold.. they are not service by the consumer you need a remanufactured one. As for a tune up on that engine a fuel filter/air filter and an spark plugs is all you need to do. You should alos clean the throttle plate and throttle bore on that engine. make sure you use only AC Delco plugs in it nothing else! Good luck :)
