Pontiac Repair: Accelerator Stuck, pontiac trans sport, accelerator pedal

Question
While driving my 98 Pontiac Trans Sport Van @ 45 MPH the vehicle began to accelerate on its own.  I managed to slow it down and stop it, but the RPM's continue to surge up and down between 2500 and 4000.  Accelerator Pedal seems to be lower, but it's hard to say.  I can't pull it back up to where I think it should be.  Don't know if this is an issue with the throttle cable or speed control or something else. Haven't had a chance to check it out since I just got it towed home.  Can you provide any suggestions based on this description?

Answer
Hi dale:

this is an odd one. I caan't say thaat I have ever seen this on this type of van. unhook the throttle cable from the throttle body and see if the throttle plate closes if it closes then it's either the cable or the pedal assembly. If the throttle plate/body is not stuck open the there is some sort of a fuel injection issue going on like a huge vacuum leak or one of the data sensors is bad and sending the wrong into to the engine computer causing the increased engine speed. Any seervice engine light on?
