Pontiac Repair: 95 Quad 4 Grand Am, crankshaft position sensor, fuel pressure regulator

Question
Recently replaced head gasket, now while driving engine shuts off. We need to wait 3-4 min and then it will start. This is what I have checked. Fuses(PCM,gages, turns, ERLS) are live even after it shuts off. Checked power at IDI connector which is between terminal K & L - that's good. I've monitored #1 injector while it is running with a test light and when the engine shuts off the test light stayed on until there was no oil pressure when the engine died, causing the fuel pump to shut off. During a 10 mile test drive it will happen 5 times. Engine temp is normal. Replaced the fuel filter and have good pressure. Replaced fuel pressure regulator which fixed a surging problem that was causing sputtering when it first started. What is it.. where should I check next

Answer
Hi Jim:

I would make sure all the ground wires on the engine to tranmsission mounting bolts are clean and tight. give each of them a tug if the break that's you issue. It's odd for these engine to have a stalling problem.. I'd look at a possable crankshaft position sensor issue. When it does die you have to see if you are loosing spark. you can check the restance across the crank sensor wiing the 2 wire colors at the ignition module are purple and yellow. That resistance should be between 800 and say 1400 ohms cold. As the engine warms up the resisatance should change a bit and go up but when it dies it should be way more the 1400 or far less then 800 if so that is the issue. good luck :)
