Pontiac Repair: fiero, pontiac fiero, fuel pump relay

Question
QUESTION: I have got my 1985 pontiac fiero to a point where it will run. When i crank the car it fires right up but when i let off the gas and try to let it idle it will not idle just cut off. what could possible be the problem? i have already tried spraying penetrating lube into the egr valve and it didn't do any good.

ANSWER: Hi Jeremy:

What lead up to this issue. was it runing fine and then this started to happen? it could be a lot of things. one of the engine sesnors could be bad giving the computer a bad input and then it will not allow it to run. You could have an issue with low fuel pressure or bad gas. if you did some engine work to this the timing could be way out of wack. these are just a few of the possabilities let me know what lead up to this so maybe I can help you out further.
good luck :)

QUESTION: ok so i tried to crank the car up today after i let the lube sit in the EGR valve and put it back on and the ECM started smoking and evidently 2 ground wires were the ones doin the smoking. one went to the fuel pump relay but the fuel pump has the correct amount of pressure on it. but on my car the oil and fuel presssure are tandem relays. should i replace the relay and ECM? or just the ECM? i don't know what the other ground wire went to yet. thanks alot

Answer
I would replace the ecm but NOT untill you know where that other ground wire went to. The computers on these older cars ARE VERY sensitive to current draw. so if it's not right you will smoke a second ECM. I would invest in a GOOD factory repait manual that shows all the wiring for the car. steer away from haynes manuals.
