Pontiac Repair: 97 Grand Am cooling fan, engine coolant, engine computer

Question
My wifes cooling fan for the radiator on her 97 Grand Am is not working. Can you tell me where the sensor and relay units are located so that I can check them to see if they are the problem?

Answer
Hey Hersell:
The relays for that are up on the right strut tower. It could have a blown fuseable link for the fans at the starter motor. The sensor to run the fan is the engine coolant sensor for the engine computer. It depends on what engine the car has to where it's loacted. You can check for power and ground at the fan motor it's self unplug it and let the car run untill it's hot and you can check the wiring at the fan with a 12 volt test light right at the connector. If this car has A/C and it still works turn the a/c on and after a minute or so the fan should come on before the car hist operating temp. What you really need is a scan tool so you can see what the coolant temps is and if the engine computer is commanding the fan on or not. Hope that helps you out. Good luck :}
