Pontiac Repair: 95 firebird shifter stuck, brake light switch, heat cycles

Question
My 95 firebirds automatic trans. shifter keeps sticking in the park position. its been towed to the dealership three times an they can`t figureout whats wrong. Any Ideas?

Answer
Hey Bryan:

it could be a bunch of things. The most likely thing is wither the BTSI solenoid which is the brake/transmission/interlock solenoid and it's system it could be brake light switch or it could be the transmission position switch on the outside of the transmission. That is the first thing I would look at. Those were known for going bad and a good indication of if that's the case is if you can't get the connectors to cone out of the switch then more than likely that is the issue. over time and heat cycles there is a sealer inside that switch that get on and into the contacts and the connectors and makes a bad connection either inside the switch of between the switch and the harness for the body. I'd look there fist and trace it backwards. Sorry I can't be of much more help with out seeing this it's hard to say what it actually is. Good luck :)
