Mitsubishi: Clutch/Transmission probs 92 3000 GT VR-4, wheel drive car, gt vr

Question
My '92 3000 GT VR-4 (R. Straman Convertible, 43k miles) had problem this week; no accelleration, felt like clutch slipping.  Had it towed to dealer; diagnosed as blown clutch, blown tranny and transaxle too.  They are getting quote from Mitsu on all parts to replace, could be a big number.  Have been offered a '92 VR-4 for $5k, 90k miles on engine, 8k miles on clutch...would it be smarter to buy it and use it for parts?  Looking for some advice.

Answer
Hi Jim,

Well, I never found a dealer I could trust. It is very unlikely that you have all those problems. I am assuming this is a 5 spd because you mentioned the clutch and truely, that is probably your only problem. First of all, the transaxle is part of the transmission. Front wheel drive car transmissions are commonly referred to as transaxles. So I feel that the dealer is not being truthful with you. I suggest finding a Cottman Transmission shop in your area and have them diagnose the problem for free. It would be worth the extra tow charge and Cottman will tow for free if you do the work with them. If you don't have a Cottman near you, than you might ask your friends or family whom they might have dealt with before to find a shop that you can trust. Cottman.com for their locater. Hope this helps...
