Pontiac Repair: lighter, cigarette lighter, fuse

My cigarette lighter has just stop working.Would you have any tips on what could be the problem. The last time I used it I pushed in the lighter and smoke started to come out of the vents, I pulled out the lighter and found a penny inside. I pulled out the penny and now when I push in the lighter it no longer heats up, Any input would be great.         Thank You, Ramiro

The fuse for the cigarette lighter.

All of the circuits in your car have a fuse at some point.
The fuse stops things from catching on fire by burning itself up when the circuit consumes to much electricity.
If it did not stop working the penny would keep smoking.
