Porsche Repair: 1975 Porsche 911 SLOW Power Windows, adjustment screws, porsche 911

Question
Hey,
Just wanted to see if any of you Porsche geniuses knew why my power windows might be running so slooooow.  Could it be a fuse or is it just old age? Can I convert to a manual set-up?

                         Thanks Again,

Answer
For the moment, ignore the design and the technology of the mechanism as compared to modern cars.  Slow..... can be caused by a few things:

1) Worn felt in the channels.
2) The viscosity of the grease in the gear box, lift arm joints and gears is thickening due to age or lower temperatures.
3) Alignment of the track or glide channels
4) High resistance in the motor or switch; battery voltage.

The common solution seems to be to replace the felt in the tracks.  Depending upon the year the felt is either glued in the track (earlier years) or is slid in as a replacement component.    You can test this by simply spraying some clear silicone on the channel felts, if things improve its time to replace them.   While you are in there wipe off any old grease that has firmed up or turned to wax and recoat or spray with your favorite light duty grease.

Check for binding (that is a track that is not aligned properly).  I recall there were adjustment screws to adjust the level of window, should be near parallel with the top opening on the door (where window enters and exits top of door).

On the electrical side and with the regulators.  First check to see if all the wire connections are clean and tight (check for corrosion).   You can check the switch resistance by by-passing it (remove the switch from the circuit).  Grab a stop watch. Time the up or down with the switch in the circuit and compare it to bypassing it.  If it is significant check the resistance of the switch and replace if high.    Motors or regulators are another issue, I recall there is a left and a right, no rebuild kits or instructions for R& R at this component level.     I know with my 911 the windows operate faster when the battery is fully charged.

Hope this helps.
