Porsche Repair: 911 long term storage, long term storage, financial viewpoint

Question
I have to move overseas for a couple of years and I am trying to decide whether to store my 87 911 or sell it.  Am I going to do harm by storing the car for a couple of years in an underground parking garage, running it once per year at the most, or would it be better to sell it so that the engine does not deteriorate.  Thanks in advance

Answer
Hi Dan,

That's an interesting dilemma.  I'll assume you are talking about two years just to peg a number to this.  I'd be very inclined to store the car for two years but over that I'd be more inclined to sell.  This assumes you have no other reasons to keep the car...like it was the car you got your first kiss in...or something else memorable.

If you can say I'll be driving it again in 24 months I'd store it and not start it during that time.  There is too much prep work you'd have to do for one start-up.

If you'll be storing it longer, it's definitely possible but there are several things to do beforehand and a whole list of things to do when you return.  Yep, I'd be a bit concerned about the engine, but seals drying up and fuel drying and leaving its sediment are bigger problems.

So...you'll have to make the call.  Just from a financial viewpoint, the dollars from the sale could be invested till you return to buy a newer 911...From a sentimental standpoint (the first kiss thing) or if you consider the car collectible, which is unlikely, you'd want to be able to say, I'm keeping this car for a very long time.  So... can you say this?
