RV Repair: older RV parts manuals, owners manuals, etc?, brake shoes, water solution

Question
Recently purchased a 1993 Rockwood Beechwood 33ft coach and would like any info on where I might be able to purchase a manual for it?  Also, where can I get service or work done, such as brakes?  Any parts guides out there that would make it easier to have work done by buddies?  ANY help here would be great..it sure is hard to find info for this year\model.  THANK YOU

Answer
Kevin, First I am not sure if this is a motorhome or travel trailer. If it is a motor home the brakes should be done at a shop unless someone you know does automotive brakes. If it it a trailer then you will want to get the wheels off the ground and the trailer on jack stands so it is secure and won't move on you. Then pop the tires off and the dust cover off the drum. There is a nut in there that will need to be removed to take the drum off. Sometimes this is hard and you may need to get behind the backing plate to the adjustment hole and loosen them up. They can make a ridge in the drum that can keep it on or make it hard to get off. Once the drums are off you can inspect the drums and brake shoes to see that everything looks good. There are 2 surfaces to look at and that is the shoe surface and the magnet surface. If they are not too bad then you can have them turned and I would replace the backing plates from there. You can buy them pre assembled and they are pretty easy to replace. Make sure that you connect the wires and clean the bearings with solvent until they are clean. Then before packing the grease in the bearings you will want to swish the bearings around in a soap water solution and then rinse with clean water. I always use hot water for this. Be sure to blow dry the bearings off but never let then spin free when doing this. Put a new seal on each drum and then install them and put the nut on. To adjust the what they call lash of the bearings, when the nut gets pretty tight on the drum stop the drum from moving and tighten the nut fairly snug and while keeping the drum still back the nut off and tighten it by hand to where it is again snug. If when you go to put the cotter pin back in and the holes don't align then back it off just enough to align it with the holes. As for a manual for this coach I have no idea where you might be able to locate one unless you are able to find one on line somewhere. Remember to test the brakes for operation before putting the tires back on and this can be done by making sure that the battery is good and then pulling the emergency brake away cable which will activate the brakes. They should not be able to be turned then. If the magnet is working and you can turn the drum then adjust until they are right. I hope that this helps, Bill
