RV Repair: Dometic refrigerator - Gas/elect, 5th wheel, burner assembly

Question
I Have a Dometic RM2611 Gas/Elecric refrigerator in my 1994 21 foot 5th wheel.  I have used it on electric often and it works fine.  I tried it on gas and all it does is click and then the CHECK LITE comes on.  So ---I'm guessing the solenoid is not opening  or the igniter is not sparking.  I have 12.3 VDC to the terminals coming in.  should I replace both the solenoid and the igniter or just igniter? AND- Where is the igniter?  I don't have a repair manual. Gas to all other units work well. Have had no problems with the Refer. as long as it is on Electric. OR- Do you have any other trouble shootin sugestions?  I have cleaned all accessible terminals and connections.
Thanks

Answer
Hi Del:
The igniter is located on the lower part of the heat box. There is a small metal cover held on by one screw and then the cover comes off and you can see the burner assembly. The igniter is the little rod above the burner and it has a high voltage wire to it. It is black or orange in color. Usually whet happens is that some rust or debris falls on the burner and shorts out the spark. The click you are hearing is probably the gas valve solenoid but you can verify that by standing ouside touching the gas valve while somebody tries to light it. I have not seen many gas valves or igniters go bad but the control boards go out often and so does the re-igniter. Both of these will stop the ignition. Another way to check is to try lighting the burner with a match, have somebody turn it on inside while you hold a lit match to the burner slots. The flame is very small and it will not burn you. Anyway eliminate things one at a time and the one thats left is the problem. My guess is that either there is a piece of rust shorting the igniter out or the board is bad. Good luck.
