RV Repair: 220v vs. 110v., happy camping, 110v outlet

Question
We purchased a 1995 Jayco pop-up and never thought to plug it
in. Well, we got it home and it has a 220v plug with another
piece that fits over it so you can plug it into a 110v outlet. When
we did that our 60 watt bulb barely glowed. Do you know why
that would have happened and if you do, how do we fix it?

Answer
Jennifer,
Your camper is equipped with a 30 amp 120 volt electrical system.  That is why the cord end is configured the way it is.  The piece on the end of the cord is called a 30 amp to 15 amp adapter and is used so you can plug it in at home to a regular outlet.  It sounds like you may have a bad connection either in the circuit you are plugging into or in the camper itself.  Try plugging the light fixture you were plugging into the camper into the cord you were plugging the camper into and see if it works.  The problem could be in the adapter itself.  People try to run the roof air conditioner when its plugged in using the adapter but it pulls too many amps and melts the adapter.  When you are plugged in using the adapter you need to keep your electrical usage to a minimum.  I hope this helps, good luck and happy camping.
