RV Repair: Roof and side repair, kool seal, liquid rubber

Question
I just purchased a 1978 22ft Wilderness fifth wheel.  The roof looks like it is aluminum (silver in color) and leaks in a small spot near the left edge. The damage is in a cabinet above the refridgerator.  My first question is what is best method for roof repair....liquid rubber roof, kwik seal, epdm rubber sheets or what?  Should I seal the entire roof (I suspect that there may be other problems if not now, soon)?

Second, there is an area on the right rear side where there has been a leak and the wood is rotted under the siding. It appears to be easily assessable as it is the back right bottom corner about 2 feet up. How should I go about fixing this area?

And where can I find a good repair manual?  I only paid $500 for the RV and all of the appliances work. It was a great deal! I intend to do all repairs myself if possible.

Thanks a ton!!!!

Answer
Mark,

As far as the roof goes it just depends on how much you want to spend.  Kool Seal will be the cheapest, but will probably seal it for the shortest amount of time.  The liquid rubber should work better, but will cost more.  In order to put a new EPDM everything mounted to the roof will have to come off so you will have quite a bit of time and materials invested in that repair.  I would say you would be better off with the Kool Seal going by the age of the unit.  Just keep an eye on it and reseal as needed.

For the replacement of the rotten framing you will want to remove the siding in the area that needs repair and just cutout the damaged area and replace as needed.  You may want to add some additional framing to reinforce the area depending on what has to be removed.

Any RV parts store should have or have access to the limited number of repair manuals for RV's.  Unfortunately, there just aren't that many out there.  I hope this helps and good luck with your project.
