RV Repair: Do it Yourself WATER HEATER installation, class c rv, atwood water heater

Question
Hello,

I have a 1983 Coachmen Class C RV.

The Atwood water heater (gas with pilot ignition) is broken.

I am considering buying a used-but-working Atwood heater and installing it myself.

Q: Is this something I should tackle?  I am fairly handy and have looked the job over briefly.  Can I safely unhook the gas and water lines and reconnect them to a new heater without any major problems?
Are there any surprizes I should look out for?

I'd appreciate any helpful tips you have regarding removal and installation of a new heater.

thanks much!

Answer
Dan,
Yes, you should be able to tackle this project without any major problems.  My only suggestions would be to first make sure the gas is off. Next, always use a backup wrench when you are disconnecting and reconnecting the gas and water lines.  Before you begin remove the drain plug and open the pressure relief valve.  And finally after you have reconnected the gas line, turn the gas on and check the fittings for leaks with a soapy water solution.  Just make sure whatever soap you use contains no ammonia as it will deteriorate the brass fittings.  Of course you will want to hook water up and check for water leaks when you are done.  I hope this helps.
