Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): New generator with nat gas kit..., motor made in china, nat gas

Question
I have just purchased a Gentron 10,000 watt generator from Sam's.  It has a JD motor on it that I'm told is a copy of a Honda motor made in China.  Today I installed a natural gas kit to allow it to run on both gasoline and natural gas.  Running on gasoline the generator still runs and powers the entire home minus the central air but now it has a surging to it.  Every 5 to 10 seconds it loses some rpm's and immediately regains it.  You can see a dimming of the lights inside the home when it surges.  I did not have this problem before the kit.  I tried pulling the choke partially out to see if enriching the mixture increases or reduces the surging.  It seems the surging gets worse as I pull the choke out slightly so I'm leaning towards the unit running rich.  I know the parts are installed properly and my guess is by adding the adapter between the carb and the air cleaner it has now made it a longer run or restrict the air flow slightly.  The regulator has an inlet that is open that I put my hand over to stop the airflow while nat gas isn't hooked up but it didn't seem to make a difference.  I figured it would run leaner with that inlet open to allow even more air into the carb without the restriction of the air cleaner.  Any idea where I should start?

Thanks,

Grant

Answer
Most surging problems are caused by a dirty carburetor but if the unit was not surging until you install the natural gas kit then, like you stated, the effected the operation.

Have you removed the natural gas kit to see if the engine still surges?  Is there any model number on the generator or the engine?  I'd like to do some more research on you genset.
