Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): mandrel assembly on Craftsman mower, craftsman model, correct torque

Question
I just replaced the mandrel on my Craftsman Model 917.273640 18.5 HP 42" mower. When I put the pulley on the splines, it does not seem to tighten down far enough. There is too much play. I inserted the washer below the pulley as per the schematic. Would adding another washer "fix" it or would it create some other type of problem. The replacement mandrel is exactly the same dimensions as the original.

Answer
Hello Mike:

>>From your Description it Sounds like you have a New Mandrel that is Metric and the Pulley is SAE.
>>I have had this Problem Showing up on a Lot of the Mandrals we are Replacing in the Shop.
>>Use a Lock Washer on the Top of the Pulley and then Tighten the Nut to the Correct Torque (75 to 80 Ft Pds) to Remove the Slack and the Unit should Perform Correctly.
>>You can Use this Site Addy; http://www.morbark.com/Service/belttorque.pdf to Locate the Correct Torque for this Application.
>>If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I Hope to be Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.

Good Luck
