Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): adding oil filter to B&S 21hp intek, oil pressure gauge, fitting adapters

Question
QUESTION: Can I just add oil filter nipple p/n 690954 to existing engine(407677-0229-E1) and then filter to replace cap. I want to convert my lawnmower to have a filter as cap is cracked and leaks. are any other parts needed? Thanks in advance.

ANSWER: I have not tried this mod but it will probably work as the oil sump is the same part number for engine with or without filters.  It is cheaper for Briggs to make one part that works for all applications so they usually have all the holes drilled and bolt holes case in the part.

Are there threads in the oil pan to accept the nipple?  If so, I'd buy a nipple and filter and install them.

QUESTION: Hi Eric,
There are threads where the cap screwed on to the side of the sump. The cap itself was the diameter of a filter and had a gasket like an oil filter would with a threaded center piece that went in were the nipple would fit. The center piece had a slot along its length to apparently allow the oil to circulate. The threads in sump only go back half way and stop in the middle of hole. Hope pictures show my description. The nipple would not completely cover the inner hole in attached picture and I'm not sure if there should be any other parts or if the nipple is all that is needed for proper filter operation. Thanks for your time.

Answer
The nipple should be the only part you need but if you want you can use a cheap auto style oil pressure monitor to verfiy oil pressure before you install the nipple/filter and then measure the oil pressure after the parts install.

You can connect the oil pressure gauge at the drain plug hole on the side of the block.

Filter and nipple should be less than $20.00 so you should be out much money but I would verify oil pressure before and after.  A cheap oil pressure gauge should be less than $15 but you will probably spend just as much with fitting adapters.
