Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Repairing a steering problem Craftsman tractor, craftsman lawn tractor, steering gears

Question
Hi...hoping you can help.  The steering went in my craftsman lawn tractor model 917.270810.  I was planning to replace the steering shaft (part # 156546).  When I started to do this, I noticed the existing steering shaft was loose.  I was hoping I could just tighten the torx bolt inside the support shaft (#160395).  As I disassembled the parts, I wound up removing the bracket which holds the steering gears and mechanisms.  I have it out and on a workbench now.  It seems simple that I would just remove the Pittman arm from the bracket and the support shaft would be free to access the torx nut which is up inside the support shaft.  The problem I have encountered is that the Pittman arm doesn't just easily come out of the bracket. It only moves about 3/4 of an inch.  I didn't want to force it for fear of breaking anything.  There must be a way to easily remove this piece.  Any thoughts?  I could provide photo's if you needed them.  Thank you.
