Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): sears custom 10, delco remy, voltage regulators

Question
I have a sears custom 10 that io purchased with snow blower and plow. I know small engines and repair them myself but it is the electrical system that i cannot do to well. It has an HH100 Tecumseh and a belt drive starter. Is the the starter an alternator and how do i hook up the wiring to charge the battery as it is running?  It has a 3 prong ignition switch and a voltage regulator that probably needs to be replaced but the wiring is all not in the right order and has a kill switch but the ignition does not shut the engine off if you turn it off. D you know if there is a wiring diagram out there for these tractors...It is a work horse and runs beautiful.....Thanks   Dave

Answer
David...

Since your a motorhead like me, I would suggest you head on over to www.mytractorforum.com and look for this information.

When I get these oldies, I rewire them completely. The unit not shutting off with the key switch is an indicator that someone sometime replaced the starter key switch with the wrong switch.

The starter is most likely a starter/generator.  A Delco Remy perhaps?  There are specific procedures for testing the voltage regulators and generators, however since i dont know what you have exactly (a pic would help) i dont know which way to advice you.
