Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 2005 troy built pony model 17.5 b&s engine, volt drop, compression stroke


Question
I recently bought this mower used and it seems ok except for the starting of it,it tries for a second and then moves very slowly and then the starter clicks like on  a car.is it the battery,starter or the solenoid,I changed the oil and it was dirty but no gas smell.Please help.

CHECK  YOUR BATTERY 1ST  - RECHARGE IT   ENGINE SOUNDS LIKE ITS BASICS ARE OK
IE    FUEL, AIR, COMPRESSION , TIMMING, SPARK

SET PARK BRAKE ON ,TURN KEY TO RUN MODE
TRY USING CAR JUMP WIRE SET AND JUMP  BATTERY  AND CONNECT  HEAVY RED WIRE TO  STARTER MOTOR  TERMINAL AND OTHER END OF JUMP WIRE TO POSITIVE BATTERY TERMINAL ON THE JUMP BATTERY , THEN CONNECT HEAVY BLACK WIRE TO A GOOD GROUND ON ENGINE  AND OTHER END OF BLACK   JUMP  WIRE TO  JUMP BATTERY  NEGATIVE TERMINAL  - THE   ENGINE SHOULD CRANK OVER WELL AND START

IF ITS CRANKS AND STARTS WELL LIKE THIS  THEN HAVE YOUR BATTERY LOAD TESTED
IF COMES UP FAULTY REPLACE BATTERY  - BUT MAKE SURE BATTERY NEGATIVE LEAD HAS A GOOD CLEAN SOUND EARTH / GROUND POINT     

TRY ADJUSTING  INLET AND EXHAUST VALVE CLEARANCE

WATCH INLET VALVE ( THE BOTTOM  VALVE) OPEN THEN CLOSE FULLY , THEN ROTATE PISTON TDC  COMPRESSION STROKE , THEN CONTINUE ROTATING PISTON DOWN UNTIL PISTON IS 1/4 INCH PAST TDC ON POWER STROKE  ITS AT THIS POSITION VALVES ARE ADJUSTED

THEN RESET INLET CLEARANCE  TO 0.003"  AND EXHAUST CLEARANCE TO 0.005" AND TIGHTEN CENTRE LOC SCREW

NOTE MAKE SURE THAT YOU BATTERY IS FULLY CHARGED AND YOU HAVE A GOOD GROUND CONNECTION   FROM ENGINE TO BATTERY NEGATIVE   AND YOUR  SUPPLY VOLTAGES ARE AT LEAST 12 -12.5 VOLT  WITH NO EXCESSIVE VOLT DROP  AND THE MACHINE IS CHARGING THE BATTERY WHEN RUNNING

MAKE SURE SOLENOID IS FUNCTIONING PROPERLY AND NO EXCESSIVE RESISTANCE ACROSS ITS HEAVY  CONTACTS ( IE  BUND CONTACTS )

YOU SHOULD SEE  BATTERY VOLTAGE  + 1.5 - 2 VOLT ABOVE BATTERY VOLTAGE IF  CHARGING SYSTEM IS WORKING OK  BASICALLY  YOU SHOULD SEE BETWEEN 14 -15 VOLT ACROSS  THE BATTERY TERMINALS
WHEN CHECKED WITH A VOLTMETER
