Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 8 HP snowblower wont start, safety switches, float bowl

Question
QUESTION: Dear Expert

I have a craftsman snow blower that will not start.
I checked the spark and it does not have spark.
It is the type that has the coil and points under the flywheel.
I cleaned and sanded the parts that come close to the magnets on the flywheel and
Re-gaped the points.
It was running last year then I stored it in my leakey shed over the summer and when I took I t out it wouldn’t start
The blower is an older:
Craftsman 26 inch cut with a 8 HP Tecumseh engine
Model C914 52850 the serial was hard to make out but it looks like C88576

And the engine is a:
8 Hp Tecumseh
Model     143-686142
Serial       8118D

Any suggestions appreciated

Thanks Derek

ANSWER: Hi Derek,

Check the tank is at least 1/2 full of FRESH gas.

Check the plug wire is connected properly to the machine, without any kinks or detachments.

See the spark plug is gapped properly and is tightened properly.

Try cleaning out the gas tank and putting fresh gas in there.

See how it goes and get back to me.

Howard

QUESTION: Dear Howard

The tank was ½ -3/4 full and there are no kinks or defects in the wire or connection and the plug has been gaped and cleaned.
The tank and carb were cleaned and drained including the float bowl before I stored it.
And I refueled it with fresh gas when I went to start it.
I also tried quick start which if it had Any spark at all it would have given me some sort of fire or attempt to start.

Any suggestions appreciated

Thanks Derek

Answer
Hi Derek,

Sorry about the delay in getting back to you.

So you still don't have any spark?  That is a problem.  Check that all the wiring connections and safety switches are intact.

Check that the spark plug is good shape.

Since every other item you have checked on the engine, it sounds like you may have to consider

replacing the coil.  These can be a bit expensive to purchase (coils), but if you are not getting a

spark then that would be the place I would be looking to first.

Sincerely,

Howard
