Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): cant shut off my mtd lawn tractor w key, mtd lawn tractor, followup question

Question
QUESTION: I recebtly bought a basket case lawn tractor. I got it running but the only problem is I can shut it off with the key....I checked the switch and it is ok.I checked the ccoil and it was only half there(and still ran) I replaced the coil and still cant get it shut off..

ANSWER: You say engine will run correct?  While the engine is running take the black wire that is coming from the coil and touch it to the engine, the engine should stop running.

I speculate that you have the improper key switch.  All though they all look the same they are different internally.

Get the model number of the tractor, located under the seat, and get the correct key switch. I think you find this is your problem.

Good Luck

QUESTION: OK you mean the one coming from the magneto right.. I also started it with the magneto unplugged ?

Answer
If you do not have a wire hooked to the magneto, then this is why you can not turn the engine off.  There needs to be a ground wire hooked to the magneto.  When the key switch is turned off, this is the wire that is needed to turn the engine off.  Does this help, if not do a followup question and I will take a photograph for you.
