Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Toro Z Master Estate 400 Kohler Command SP 18, fly wheel, soleniod

Question
QUESTION: Model 74412 My wife was cutting grass and she ran out of gas. When I put the gas in it would not start. I thought maybe the spark plug was bad so I replaced it. Still nothing. Tried another new plug, still nothing. Now it will turn over just not fire. I thought maybe it had bad gas, drained it, same thing. Replaced fuel filter, still nothing. Pulled the top off and cleaned the armature on the fly wheel, still nothing. I was wondering if the gap on the module-ignition wasn't set right or if its possibly bad all together. It looked as if the module-ignition was rubbing the module-ignition. I was told to use a post card in between to set the gap, does that sound right? I checked the carb and its getting gas. Like I said it will turn over just not fire. Bad Safety Switch or would it even turn over with that problem? Bad stator maybe? I don't know bro, I am out of ideas.

ANSWER: So it turns over gets gas but has no spark? Is that the skinny of it? If so,it sounds like you have tryed a lot of little tricks with no luck, and yes putting a post card between is a good rule of thumb! Could be a safety switch,as a rule they kill the spark in order to shut everything down. Also check for a bad fuse somewhere near the solenoid?
Let me know how you make out and I can go from there

QUESTION: Hey Jason - the plug has always sparked. My bad on the comments about it not firing. I was referring to the motor just not starting lol. I also had the ignition module checked and it is ok. I cleaned the carb out thoroughly today - soaked it in carb cleaner for hours - and tried again thinking maybe the jets were clogged. No luck. It is also getting gas to the carb. What about the soleniod? Would that allow it to turn over but not fire? I have checked the fuses and they look ok but I am going to go ahead and replace them anyhow. Do you think I need to check the compression next? Someone told me that a Kohler - when it runs out of gas - could possibly have burned a valve. That does not make sense to me but I guess at this point anything is possible. My oil level was a little low and I had it on a hill and the mower is equipped with a low oil sensor. Could it go bad?

Answer
sorry it took so long,I would check the keyway for the flywheel? If that broke it will be out of time and would turn over fine but not run.If that did not brake you may have a stuck valve? If the intake valve either got stuck or is not seating it would not run.Hopfully you have already fixed it!
