Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): looking parts for briggs and stratton engine, briggs and stratton, piston assembly

Question
QUESTION: I have a asphalt roller that has a briggs and stratton engine model 326437, type 0897-01, code 8305251, the piston rod is broke, I took the piston out but the cylinder bore is rusted just on the top where the piston stopped and left a little grove, I cleaned with 1000 grit paper but I feel it still,I'm planning to put a new rebuilding kit, is that possible?, and help me to find the exact parts for that engine 'cause I couldn't find all the numbers for that engine, thank you

ANSWER: I don't see that type number listed, is it 0797-01?

You'll have to hone the cylinder with a cylinder hone to get good results.  If you don't, the rings probably won't seal very well.  If the rust is very deep, then the cylinder will need to be bored oversize until the surface is flat.

QUESTION: thank you for answering, but if I hone the cylinder is gonna affect the size of the bore? or it's just to clean it?, and I checked the number again and the numbers are correct: model 326437, type 0897-01, code 8305251, please help me out to find the parts number for the rebuilding kit,(is there like a different mod/type/code number that works out the same?)

Answer
I don't have a listing for a 326437 with a type of 0897-01 but I would think it's the same as other 326437 engines as far as the rod and piston assembly.  You'll have to measure the crankshaft and the cylinder bore and compare them to stock spec's for the piston, rings and rod you need.  This has to be done after honing and polishing the crankshaft.

The engine gasket kit is P/N 299719.

You'll also need to compare your crank output, (PTO side) bearing support to the available ones to pick the right part number.

Unfortunately, there's no easy way to just order a specific part number and get what you need.  A good bit of measuring and comparing is required and then you have to mock-up assembly and check all clearances in mock-up.  Then you can assemble the engine.  I would recommend buying the service manual for this engine or one of the Clymer manuals so you have all the specs at hand.

Honing the cylinder won't affect the bore diameter enough to matter.  It's done to break the glaze, prepare a proper cross-hatch pattern on the cylinder wall for good ring sealing and show you if the cylinder is out-of-round or needing to be bored.  Honing should be done before ordering any parts.  You wouldn't want to order a bunch of internal parts, that usually aren't returnable, when the block is too out of round to be used or in need of boring.
