Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Coil, new spark, push mower

Question
QUESTION: I have a Lawnboy push mower that has no spark so I think that I need a new coil. How do I install and adjust a new coil.

ANSWER: Remove the peripherals and flywheel cover from the engine. The coil is secured to the engine block with bolts. Make sure the new coil is the same distance from the flywheel as the old one. Before you replace the coil, though, I would try a new spark plug. It could just be an old, dirty plug.

QUESTION: I have already removed the coil and have bought a new one so how do I adjust the distance between the coil and the Flywheel?
The spark plug was not firing and it was a new plug.

Answer
Loosen the bolts on the new coil. It should slide back and forth. My technique is to slide three pieces of computer paper between the flywheel and coil to set the right distance. If you find you can't slide the coil back and forth, then the distance is pre-set, and needs no adjusting.
