Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 1979 8hp Briggs I/C troy bilt tiller Carb issues, briggs choke

Question
I had my carb rebuilt several years ago and noticed when I got it back that the choke had to be almost fully closed for the engine to run. At least I am assuming it is fully closed as the lever is almost to the stop.  Just fired her up today and she did w/i 2 pulls, that part was great.  The problem was she would cut out from time to time and would run only when I had that lever (choke) pushed to the fully choked stop (all the way to the left). Something obviously is not correct.  I tightened the screw to the choke because I think the vibration caused it to move and then it would cut out again.  Anyway, thought you might have an idea of what to do.  I appreciate your time.

Answer
The carburetor was either improperly rebuilt or is just not going to be able to be rebuilt successfully.  We usually replace them if they still have problems after a cleaning. You shouldn't run it with the choke on like this because what's happening is the engine is overlean and can overheat.  Using the choke is enrichening the mix enough to keep it running, but it's still probably not getting enough fuel.  Thanks, PK.
