Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Kohler engine not firing, kohler coil

Question
I asked John the following:
I have a Cub Cadet rider with a Kohler CH15S engine.  These are the numbers I have on the engine.
SKH426U1G2RA   44506 or 44508
The engine was running and I shut it off.  Would not restart.  I pulled the plug and grounded it and turned the engine - no fire on the plug.  Changed plug and same result.  It did this earlier and after it set for several days I tried starting and it ran for awhile and then as described above.  The mower has an electric PTO on the front and a drive shaft on the rear.

Based on his answer I've down loaded a service manual.  I removed the plug, grounded, and no spark.  Then removed the ground wire from the ignition module, still no spark.  Next I removed the module and measured impedance from plug wire to laminated coil.  Measured 9200 ohms, within the range the service manual gave, 7,400 - 18,900 ohms.  Is there another test for the module?  I checked the magnets and they still magnetize.

Thanks,

George

Answer
Since you pulled the kill wire and there was still no spark, I think you have a bad coil.  There's really nothing else to check once you're checked the secondary.  Just unplugging the coil, as long as the coil is gapped properly, is usually all the test you need.

The part number for the coil should be 12 58404-s and lists for $46.06.  I think you've pretty much isolated the problem.  Let me know if you have any questions.  Thanks, PK.
