Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): huskee 26 hp 54 deck kroeler motor, huskee mower

Question
i have heard alot of bad reviews on this mower. it is 1-2 years old. Hydrostatic, cruise control. Is it worth $1000 or  are the complaints true? Can you tell me anything about this mower. it looks and sounds good.  Is this a good investment. Please answer ASAP as i am thinking about purchasing this mower tomorrow.  Thank you.

Answer
I don't know what the prices are in your market for used equipment.  Assuming under 150 hours or so, I would say that it's worth about 50-60% of what it cost new if it's in very good condition.  I don't know what the original price was, that's something you should try to find out.

It's built by MTD and is what it is.  It's a residential lawnmower.  It's not made to bounce around a pasture cutting 2 foot tall grasses all day and it's not for the commercial operator looking to put 30 hours or more a week on it.  It's for the larger residential lawn, maybe tow a small trailer around and that sort of thing.  As long as that is the sort of use you want it for then it should do as well as most of the lawn tractors on the market.

The Kohler engine is a very good engine.  The deck's are a bit lightweight.  The MTD's are a bit harder to replace the belts on, we actually charge considerable more to change an MTD drive belt than an AYP drive belt.  Other than that, the name on the mower really doesn't mean much for the MTD and AYP built machines.  It comes down to the features of that particular set-up and which one is most comfortable to you.

Let me know if you have any questions.  Thanks, PK.
