Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Kohler RPM, dixon ztr, using a multimeter

Question
I have a 1997 Dixon ZTR with a Kohler MV20s. I was wondering how you check the RPM with a multimeter. I just rebuilt everything and I want to make sure the rpm isn't set too high. Thanks for the help.  Dave
