Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Garden Tiller, synthetic gear oil, garden tiller

Question
QUESTION: I recently purchased an old garden tiller. It is a Homko with a 4 horse Briggs engine. I would like to know what transmission oil to use, what engine oil, spark plug, and how to get an owners manual?

Thanks

ANSWER: 4 horse briggs sounds real old, if you find the model, type, code numbers on the engine, the first 2 digits of the code is the year the engine was made.
Pre 1984, and it had points type ignition.

The manufacturer has long since been absorbed by one of the
big mower companies, so any manual would be very hard to come by.

If it has the mechanical kill switch beside the spark plug, then use
a Champion cj8 plug, if not, use the champion j19lm.

SAE 30 oil in the engine, multiweight gear oil in the transmission.

Hope this helps.

QUESTION: What about synthetic oil in the engine? Is there a multiweight gear oil that is synthetic? Should I drain the gear oil and put in new?

Thanks

Answer
Yes, I belive they make a synthetic gear oil, synthetic would work fine in the engine too.  I would fully drain out the old oil to get
rid of all the dirt and possible moisture, also on those older Briggs
engines, the foam air filters start breaking up when they get old, and can be sucked into the engine, so I would replace that too, only
a couple of bucks at the mower shop.
