Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Briggs & Strattion 14 hp engine, briggs stator, briggs flywheel

Question
QUESTION: Engine will not turn over.  I started the mower and moved from garage with no problem.  I sharpened the blades after remover the spark plug wire.  I tried to start the engine and it turned over fine, but I had the spark plug wire off.  I reinstalled the wire and tried to start the engine.  The starter engages but the engine will not turn.  This happened before and I manually turned the fly wheel (top of engine) 1/4 turn and then then the engine would start.  Now I am unable to turn the fly wheel by hand.  Any ideas?

ANSWER: If you pull the spark plug out, will the engine turn over freely?

QUESTION: no.
I used a 15/16 socket and turned the engine manually.  It finally broke lose.  Unfortunately, some copper wires fell from under the flywheel.  I think this may be the alternator wiring?

Answer
It sounds like your stator has come apart.  You'll have to pull the flywheel to see exactly what's happened.  I have had a few of the Intek engines lose flywheel magnets and destroy the stator.

If you need a parts diagram you can use the parts list at my site, grandjunctionsmallengines.com.  Hopefully you don't have a bent crankshaft.  I usually recommend replacing the flywheel when magnets come off, and it sounds as if you'll need a stator as well.  If you have any questions about it, just let me know.  Thanks, PK.
