Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 21 hp B@G Intek model 407777 type0121E4, viscosity of oil, viscosity oil

Question
I have to add 8 ounces of oil to the engine whenever I get ready to use it. There are no visible leaks. The engine smokes a little when starting and while it runs. I have removed the head gaskets and they look o.k.. I change the oil religiously. Do I need to check the oil rings?

Answer
What viscosity of oil are you using.  Use SAE 30.  10w30 is an acceptable substitute, I dont recommend 10w40.  I hear more complaints from people who use multi viscosity oil then a straight weight.

You could check the oil control rings, but i would also look at the valve guide seals.  I would recommend doing or having a leak down test done on your engine by a qualified technician.  They will be able to tell you in less then 5 minutes if its your rings, valves, etc.

8 oz of oil every mowing is a lot of oil.  Also check and make sure your engine breather is clean and the breather hose is not pinched off.  The breather hose is a black hose that attaches from the air cleaner to the engine block or air filter to the cylinder head cover.

Have a great day!
